After years of anticipation, Rockstar Games has finally unveiled the first official trailer for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. On Monday, December 4th, Rockstar published the trailer on YouTube after leaks prompted an early reveal.
Trailer Shows Female Protagonist and Vice City Setting
The 91-second trailer provides the first look at GTA VI’s new protagonist, a female criminal named Lucia. It opens with Lucia in a prison jumpsuit before transitioning to shots of her wreaking havoc on the streets of Vice City with her boyfriend.
Vice City, Rockstar’s fictional take on Miami, last appeared as the setting of 2002’s GTA: Vice City. The sunny neon metropolis shown in the trailer indicates GTA VI will revisit the beloved location.
Targeting a 2025 Release Date
At the end, text confirms GTA VI is targeting a 2025 release date. Later, Rockstar specified in a press release that the game will launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
This launch window lines up with speculation that GTA VI has been in development for over 10 years since GTA V’s 2013 debut. Rockstar says GTA VI will be the “biggest, most immersive” entry in the storied franchise yet.
Trailer Leaks Lead to Early Reveal
Rockstar originally planned to premiere the trailer on December 5th at 9AM ET. However, leaked footage posted online prompted the developer to release the official trailer 15 hours early.
Prior leaks this year also revealed gameplay videos and details about Vice City’s setting. With the cat out of the bag, Rockstar decided to counter future leaks by showing the trailer on its terms.
Excitement Builds for First New GTA in Over a Decade
GTA V has sold over 170 million copies and remains one of the most popular games over a decade after launch. Its online multiplayer mode, GTA Online, receives frequent content updates and has generated billions in revenue.
Needless to say, anticipation for GTA VI among fans runs high. While story details remain under wraps, the first trailer indicates GTA VI will deliver the same explosive action that has defined the groundbreaking series since 1997.
