- Switzerland’s financial regulator FINMA has approved the country’s first spot Bitcoin ETF available to retail investors.
- The fund will hold Bitcoin directly under Swiss investment fund regulations, with additional custody safeguards and investor protection requirements.
- FINMA granted an exemption from traditional diversification rules, citing Bitcoin’s established trading history and substantial market liquidity.
Switzerland has approved its first spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund for retail investors, marking another development in the country’s regulated cryptocurrency investment market.
The Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA) announced the approval on Oct. 20, allowing a regulated investment fund to hold Bitcoin directly.

The decision gives retail investors another way to gain exposure to Bitcoin through traditional financial products without managing cryptocurrency wallets or private keys.
While Switzerland already offers several cryptocurrency exchange-traded products, the newly approved ETF operates under a different regulatory framework.
FINMA Approves First Retail Bitcoin ETF
FINMA classified the new Bitcoin ETF under Switzerland’s category of alternative investment funds carrying specific risks.
The regulator also granted an exemption from standard investment fund diversification requirements.
Traditional investment funds are generally expected to spread their holdings across multiple assets to reduce concentration risk.
However, a spot Bitcoin ETF is specifically designed to track Bitcoin by holding the cryptocurrency directly.
FINMA justified the exemption by pointing to Bitcoin’s longer trading history and significantly higher trading volumes compared with most other digital assets.
The regulator confirmed that additional fund providers have submitted applications or announced plans to launch similar Bitcoin investment products.
However, FINMA has not publicly identified the approved ETF’s issuer.

Switzerland Expands Regulated Bitcoin Access
Switzerland has supported cryptocurrency investment products for several years.
The SIX Swiss Exchange already lists multiple Bitcoin exchange-traded products, including physically backed investment vehicles.
In 2021, FINMA also approved a cryptocurrency investment fund available to qualified investors.
The latest approval differs because it introduces a spot Bitcoin ETF structured under Swiss investment fund law and accessible to retail investors.
Existing Swiss Bitcoin ETPs are generally structured as debt securities, while the new ETF operates as a regulated investment fund.
This distinction introduces specific requirements covering asset custody, operational safeguards and investor disclosures.
Bitcoin ETF Approval Comes With Investor Safeguards
FINMA emphasized that the approval does not eliminate the risks associated with investing in Bitcoin.
Financial institutions offering the ETF must comply with applicable investor protection requirements under Swiss financial services legislation.
These include measures addressing cryptocurrency custody, operational security and clear disclosure of investment risks.
The regulator also referenced its January 2026 guidance requiring supervised institutions to manage risks associated with holding digital assets.
Despite the additional safeguards, FINMA warned that Bitcoin remains highly volatile and investors could experience substantial losses.
The approval could create new opportunities for Swiss banks, asset managers and investment platforms to offer regulated Bitcoin exposure.
However, the ETF’s issuer, management fees, ticker and launch date have not yet been publicly confirmed.
