  • Circle has acquired key blockchain patents from IBM, making it the largest blockchain patent holder in the United States.
  • The deal includes more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents covering blockchain infrastructure, finance, cloud security, and enterprise technology.
  • Circle says the acquisition will strengthen the technology behind USDC, the Circle Payments Network, Arc, and its expanding suite of onchain financial products.

Circle has significantly expanded its intellectual property portfolio after acquiring a major collection of blockchain patents from IBM, a move the company says makes it the largest blockchain patent holder in the United States.

The acquisition includes more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents worldwide, covering a wide range of technologies related to blockchain infrastructure, financial services, cloud computing, supply chain verification, and enterprise applications.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Circle Strengthens Its Blockchain Infrastructure

According to Circle, the expanded patent portfolio will support the company’s long-term vision of building internet-native financial infrastructure.

The patents span foundational blockchain technologies that could be applied across several of Circle’s core products, including USDC, the Circle Payments Network, Arc, and future onchain financial services powered by AI and autonomous software agents.

The company said the acquisition reinforces its strategy of developing infrastructure that enables digital payments and programmable finance on a global scale.

IBM Partnership Continues Beyond the Deal

Circle also announced that it intends to continue working with IBM beyond the patent acquisition.

The two companies plan to explore additional commercial opportunities, although neither side disclosed what future collaborations may involve.

Circle General Counsel Sarah Wilson said intellectual property remains a key component of the company’s strategy, adding that IBM’s long history of technological innovation makes the portfolio a valuable addition to Circle’s growing blockchain ecosystem.

Patents Could Strengthen Circle’s Competitive Position

Owning one of the largest blockchain patent portfolios could provide Circle with a significant competitive advantage as digital asset infrastructure continues to mature.

The patents cover technologies relevant to banking, payments, enterprise blockchain systems, insurance, cloud security, and distributed ledger infrastructure—areas that are becoming increasingly important as financial institutions expand their use of blockchain technology.

The acquisition may also strengthen Circle’s position as competition intensifies among stablecoin issuers and blockchain infrastructure providers.

Stablecoin Industry Continues to Evolve

Circle operates one of the world’s largest stablecoin ecosystems through USDC, while continuing to expand services such as the Circle Payments Network and its enterprise blockchain platform Arc.

As governments, banks, and businesses increasingly adopt blockchain-based payment systems, intellectual property is becoming a strategic asset alongside technological innovation.

With this acquisition, Circle is positioning itself not only as a leading stablecoin issuer but also as a major owner of the foundational technologies that could power the next generation of internet-based finance.
