  • Matt Damon’s appearance in a 2021 Crypto.com ad was not a cash grab but a decision to raise funds for his charity, water.org.
  • Crypto.com donated $1 million to Damon’s organization after he donated his salary to them, supporting water.org’s mission to provide access to clean water and sanitation.
  • While the ad faced criticism, Crypto.com’s marketing efforts were successful and Damon’s partnership with the exchange highlights the importance of supporting noble causes.

Hollywood’s beloved star, Matt Damon, recently revealed the motivating factor behind his appearance in a 2021 Crypto.com advertisement: his charity, water.org. In a candid interview, Damon opened up that he took on the advertising gig to raise funds for the organization after a particularly challenging year. “We had a tough year at water.org, and I did the commercial to raise funds for the organization,” Damon explained.

In a show of support for Damon’s admirable philanthropic work, Crypto.com donated an impressive $1 million to water.org after hearing about Damon’s generous decision to give his entire salary to the organization. Damon is grateful for Crypto.com’s support, which will go a long way in providing clean water and sanitation to underserved communities worldwide.

Water.org, co-founded by Damon and philanthropist Gary White, envisions a world where everyone has access to clean water and sanitation, and basic human needs are often taken for granted in certain parts of the world. The partnership between the two entities was aimed at encouraging Crypto.com users to support this noble cause. Damon was enthusiastic about collaborating with the exchange, as he regarded it as a “like-minded partner that is committed to transforming lives through equity and access.”

However, not everyone received this partnership and Damon’s subsequent advertisement positively. Critics took umbrage with the ad, which featured Damon comparing crypto investors to astronauts and mountain climbers. Some even labeled it a “cash grab” and “grotesque.” “South Park” creators parodied the advertisement while a newspaper column accused Damon of promoting a “Ponzi scheme.”

Regardless of the mixed reception, Crypto.com’s efforts paid off handsomely. In November of 2021, the exchange reportedly shelled out $700 million for the naming rights to the NBA teams’ home, the Los Angeles Staples Center.

Despite the controversies around Damon’s association with Crypto.com, his efforts to support water.org and its essential mission are admirable. Much like other initiatives to combat environmental challenges and water scarcity, Damon’s work with water.org has never been more necessary. Damon’s partnership with Crypto.com can inspire everyone to do their part in supporting such a vital cause.

Celebrities Getting Filed for Their Crypto Endorsements

2022 saw US authorities filing lawsuits against celebrities besides Matt Damon, like Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, and Tom Brady, for their support of cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). They were claimed to have been endorsing “Ponzi schemes” due to the depreciated prices of the NFTs and loss of money from investors.
