  • Web domain registrar GoDaddy and Ethereum Name Service (ENS) have reached an agreement that will allow users to link their existing web domains to Ethereum blockchain addresses for free. This represents a connection between traditional web technologies and blockchain.
  • Users can link their GoDaddy-purchased domains with Ethereum wallet addresses through ENS. For example, beyonce.xyz could now be linked to an Ethereum wallet to enable crypto payments.
  • The partnership has the potential to significantly increase adoption of blockchain domain names, as millions of GoDaddy customers can now easily use their domains with decentralized apps. However, legal disputes like the one over eth.link highlight ongoing conflicts between traditional web companies and blockchain.

Ethereum Name Service (ENS), a domain name protocol that runs atop of Ethereum, reached an agreement with GoDaddy to allow users to link internet domains to their ENS addresses for free. This partnership between the largest internet domain registry and a blockchain domain service could signal renewed interest in connecting traditional web technologies with blockchain.

ICYMI: Ethereum Name Service (@ensdomains) partnered with GoDaddy to link web domains to blockchain

How It Works

Users will be able to link their existing internet domain names purchased through GoDaddy with wallet addresses on the Ethereum blockchain through ENS. For example, someone who owns beyonce.xyz could now link that domain name to their Ethereum wallet, making it easy for others to send crypto payments.

Potential Impact

The ENS-GoDaddy partnership has the potential to significantly increase adoption of blockchain domain names. Millions of GoDaddy’s customers can now easily use their domains with decentralized apps.

Challenges Remain

However, the deal comes even as ENS and GoDaddy remain in a legal dispute over GoDaddy’s sale of the vital ENS domain eth.link. While it shows the companies can still partner despite disagreements, it also highlights ongoing conflicts between traditional web systems and blockchain naming services.

Looking Ahead

Overall, the agreement points to increased integration between mainstream web companies and blockchain infrastructure. In the future, ENS hopes to expand beyond Ethereum to offer domain records for addresses across multiple blockchains.
